I got my hands on a nice little traditional Jewish cookbook. I was very enthusaiastic about its cultural signifigance. Then I started reading it. I couldn't find one dish I reallly wanted to make. Feh.

Not succeeding in identifying the second dish by that spelling, but my maternal grandmother made some excellent kreplach. So, they can taste great--if done right. The trick is finding someone who still knows how to do them right. Eastern European Jewish cuisine is kind of simple, but pretty time-consuming, and it's way easy to get stuff to come out too heavy and stodgy. And a lot of the prepackaged Jewish/Kosher foods are IMO total dreck--I have yet to find a bottled gefilte fish that didn't taste revolting, simultaneously over-bland and over-sweet. Alas, my bubbe is no longer alive so if I want good Jewish soul food I basically have to make my own.
