I don't have a lot of Yiddish, but my fave has to be verblunget, sometimes also spelled farblondget--an adjective which more-or-less translates as a state of confusion or mixed-up-edness. The way my elders used it, it seemed to have a connotation of "f%&@ed up beyond all recognition" -- as in, "Murray was trying to fix the kitchen faucet, and now the plumbing is all verblunget."

Close runners-up are meshuggah, meshuggenah and mishegase. Very useful terms, with all the mishegase going on in the world.

So, this Japanese man hears from a coworker that his wife is having an affair. And not just an affair, but it's with a Jew.

So he confronts her, "Are you having an affair? With a man of the Jewish faith?"

She replies, "No, not at all. Where you hear such mishegosh?"

"feh" is one of my favorites.

Should I ever get another cat, it's name is likely to be pupik.

i love the earthy sound of yiddish
it almost always makes me smile
i made up a yiddish word
      chechm
use the throat clearing sound for the ch's
      it means nasty substance
      "don't touch that, it's chechm"
"i walked in with chechm on my shoe!"

Actually, Yiddish is a legitimate language - well, a creole technically (I believe). It's a mixture of Hebrew and German, written in Hebrew.

So, while you can make up words that *sound* Yiddish, being a complete, if stagnant, language, you generally don't need to.

"schmutz" is the word you described for that second definition.

its actually very funny...since hebrew is my mother tongue, i can read yiddish, since its written with hebrew letters, but i understand about 25% and the rest sounds like total gibrish german sounding written in hebrew..

"kishta" is also a good one(we use it also in hebrew), you say it to a cat, a dog or a little annoying kid when you want them to fuck off.

When I was a kid, we had a beloved family cat that we named--nu, vhat else?--Ketzele.

When she passed on (her memory for a blessing), we got another cat and named him Irving.

Grandpa Milton still uses lots of Yiddish with me...an all time family classic for us is:

        If Mezuch Gefindment
"If you Look...you will find it"

        And

        Ze Gezunt
        Be in Health

I always like the modernization of yiddish. Hence Schmeckledekker = condom. Hey, cover your schmeckle!!!

What about Schtick fleich mit svei oiygen, or something to that effect. + A piece of meat with two eyes

I have Yiddish and Erotic word magnets on my fridge. Can't even begin with some of the stuff people have put up there. My favorite still being "Shave my little Moyel"

as far as the words go, I'll always love the classics: bubelah, kibitz, meshugge, kvetch, zhlub, farblondzhet, and so on.
