So being a jew, I am supposed to be raised w/o pork, as my grandmother kept semi kosher and we lived with her after my parents split when I was very young.
So while my friends ate bacon for breakfast, my grandmother would get "firebrand beef strips" or turkey bacon. While these are all well and good for the jew who avoids pork, it seemed to speak to me as saying, "bacon is so tasty, it is a shame you can't have any so you have to settle for this lame ass substitute while the rest of the world dines on delicious smokey goodness" Plus it also didn't help that while she avoided serving pork, shellfish didn't phase her and we dined on Maryland blue crabs every summer as well as other shell fish which are supposedly just as unkosher as pork. So I grew up eating shellfish and I can chose to eat it or not, depending on my mood, BUT since pork or more so bacon, was so taboo, if it is there in front of me, I cannot even resist.
So this is my theory for why I love bacon. Of course, when I don't want to take the time to spew all these excuses out at people (ie: other jews who NEVER eat pork) I just reply and say, "Its ok...my husband is methodist." which usually leaves them confused.

Re: Why I Love Bacon/pork (a theory)
Tue, December 14, 2004 - 1:57 PMi had a similar upbringing to a point.
i was raised orthodox so we got our meat from Morty the butcher :)
we used to get this stuff called beef fry and while it was good it wasn't bacon.
zoom ahead to age 12 and my parents got divorced and the kids moved and went with dad. "we" decide to not only join a conservative temple but also to stop keeping kosher. the first meal we had together as a motherless clan was pork chops and applesauce which was awesome. my first taste of pork was great.
i've been enjoying bacon and pork by-products ever since. -

Re: Why I Love Bacon/pork (a theory)
Wed, December 15, 2004 - 6:51 PMHeh. My parents corrupted me at an early age. Scrambled eggs and bacon for Saturday breakfast, bagels and lox and etc. for Sunday brunch. With all the other dysfunctional weird crap my folks foisted on me, damn am I glad that psych-outs about kashrut were not among them. :-) -

Re: Why I Love Bacon/pork (a theory)
Mon, December 20, 2004 - 9:59 AMmy theory is that bacon is not only taboo- making it sinfully delicous and wanted more because we can't have it but because it's also so damned tasty- we see it advertised in ways that show happy families sitting down to sunday breakfast- not complete without a few slices of greasy pork fat strips...
who wouldn't want to be part of that? -

Re: Why I Love Bacon/pork (a theory)
Mon, December 20, 2004 - 10:06 AMAh yes the fact that its taboo most certainly makes it even more appealing!
